Most cats feel safest when they start in one small, quiet room and explore the rest of the home gradually.
Settling in
- Set up a quiet room with food, water, litter and a hiding place
- Keep food and water away from the litter box
- Let your cat come to you; sit quietly nearby
- Open up more of the home when your cat seems relaxed
- Introduce other pets slowly, starting with scent swapping
Give it time
Some cats settle in a day; shy cats may take weeks. Hiding at first is normal.
